Why Orchard Lodge is the Perfect Base for North Sea Wildlife Adventures

Want to See a Puffin?

Most visitors to Yorkshire miss the greatest wildlife show on our doorstep.

While the stunning landscapes and charming villages draw thousands of tourists each year, few realize they're just minutes away from one of Britain's most spectacular natural displays. Here at Orchard Lodge, we're perfectly positioned to help you discover the incredible wildlife wonders of the North Sea.

The Hidden Wildlife Paradise Just Minutes Away

Our peaceful village setting in Flixton places you just 4 miles from the Yorkshire coast – home to an astonishing array of wildlife that changes with the seasons. From our AA 5-Star accommodation, you can enjoy a delicious breakfast prepared by Andrew and Lucinda before setting off on your wildlife adventure. Then return to the comfort of our 2 Rosette fine dining restaurant to discuss your sightings over a locally-sourced dinner.

But what exactly might you see on your North Sea wildlife expedition?

Spring and Summer: England's Largest Seabird City

Between April and August, something truly magical happens along our coastline.

The towering 112 metre chalk cliffs around Flamborough and Filey transform into England's largest seabird city. More than 400,000 birds bring these dramatic cliffs alive, creating a sensory experience you'll never forget.

The stars of this spectacular show include:

Puffins: These charismatic birds with their distinctive colourful beaks are often called "sea parrots" or "clowns of the sea." Visit between April and mid-July to watch them nesting on the cliff edges. Sadly, puffins are now on the Red List of Birds of Conservation Concern, making every sighting even more precious.

Gannets: By far the largest seabirds in the area, gannets are stunning white birds with black wing tips and creamy yellow heads. With an impressive wingspan of 2 metres, watching them soar along the cliffs is breathtaking. Bempton Cliffs hosts the largest mainland gannetry in England.

Guillemots and Razorbills: These smart-looking birds in their contrasting black and white plumage crowd onto narrow cliff ledges. Though they're inefficient flyers, they're excellent swimmers, diving deep under the sea surface in search of fish.

Kittiwakes: These medium-sized gulls with yellow beaks, white heads and grey backs create a constant chorus with their distinctive calls that gave them their name.

The Magnificent Seals of Flamborough Head

One of the most magical wildlife experiences near Orchard Lodge is encountering the seal colonies at Flamborough Head.

Both common and grey seal colonies are thriving beneath the magnificent chalk cliffs along this stretch of coastline. Gristhorpe Cliff, near Flamborough Head, is particularly renowned as one of the best places to see seals hauled out on the rocks.

You've a very good chance of seeing common seal pups in June and July, while grey seals come ashore to pup in November. These charismatic marine mammals can often be spotted bobbing in the waves or basking on rocks at low tide.

For the best and safest seal watching experience, we recommend joining one of the boat trips that operate from nearby harbours. These trips allow you to observe these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat without disturbing them. If you do spot seals on beaches during your coastal walks, remember to keep a respectful distance and keep dogs on leads.

Autumn is perhaps the best time to see grey seals around Filey Brigg and Flamborough Head, while common seal pups are more likely to be spotted in June and July. Grey seals come ashore to pup in November.

Winter Wonders: Coastal Birds and Migrating Visitors

Even in winter, the wildlife display continues. Filey Bay becomes a great place to look for:

  • Red-throated and Black-throated Divers
  • Great Crested Grebes
  • Various sea ducks including Velvet Scoter
  • Great Northern Divers

The Perfect Wildlife Watching Locations

During your stay at Orchard Lodge, we recommend visiting these prime wildlife watching spots:

RSPB Bempton Cliffs: Just a short drive away, this reserve is one of the UK's top wildlife spectacles. You're nearly 100% guaranteed to see gannets, puffins, kittiwakes and razorbills during the breeding season. The reserve has made the cliff-top viewing accessible with well-maintained paths and viewing platforms.

Flamborough Head: This dramatic headland is not only home to thriving seal colonies but also offers spectacular coastal scenery. The Yorkshire Wildlife Trust reserve here complements the nearby RSPB Bempton Cliffs, creating an extended habitat for seabirds and marine life.

Filey Brigg: This long finger of rock extending into the sea is a Site of Special Scientific Interest. It's not unusual to see migrant warblers making first landfall here, and purple sandpipers forage among the rocks in winter.

Filey Bay: Perfect for winter bird watching, with various divers and sea ducks making appearances.

Filey Dams Nature Reserve: Consisting of freshwater lagoons with adjacent marsh and grazing land, this reserve hosts tree sparrows, barn owls, and reed warblers. Late summer may bring a passing hobby, while winter is good for watching teal, wigeon and snipe from the hides.

The first signs of spring are appearing across the Yorkshire Wolds, and with them comes a bounty of wild edibles just waiting to be discovered. At Orchard Lodge, we're celebrating the season by incorporating these fresh, local ingredients into our menus. NATURE'S TREASURE HUNT Spring has finally arrived! After months of grey skies and chilly winds, the Yorkshire Wolds are bursting with new life. The woodland floors are transforming into vibrant carpets of green, dotted with early spring flowers. For food lovers, this is one of the most exciting times of year. Nature's pantry is reopening, offering delicious wild ingredients that simply can't be bought in shops. WILD GARLIC: THE STAR OF SPRING The undisputed champion of spring foraging is wild garlic (also known as ramsons). These broad, vibrant green leaves are now emerging in damp woodland areas throughout Yorkshire, filling the air with their distinctive aroma. "A rub of the leaves between your fingers will reveal a delicious garlic scent that is crying out to be made into pesto!" At Wolds Restaurant, Chef Michael has been eagerly awaiting wild garlic season. This month, you'll find it featured in several dishes on our menu: Wild garlic and Yorkshire cheese soufflé Pan-seared local lamb with wild garlic butter Handmade pasta with wild garlic pesto WHERE TO FIND WILD TREASURES If you're staying with us and fancy a foraging adventure of your own, there are several excellent spots within easy reach of Orchard Lodge: Local woodland paths - Just a short walk from our property, you'll find patches of wild garlic in the damper, shadier spots. The Yorkshire Wolds valleys - The sheltered valleys are perfect for spring foraging, with wild garlic often growing alongside streams. Organised foraging experiences - For those who prefer expert guidance, Make it Wild offers seasonal foraging experiences in North Yorkshire. Their spring event on March 29th is already sold out, showing just how popular foraging has become! FORAGING TIPS FOR BEGINNERS If you're new to foraging, here are some essential tips: Always be 100% certain of what you're picking. Wild garlic has lookalikes that can be harmful. Use your senses - Wild garlic has a distinctive smell when the leaves are crushed. Take only what you need and leave plenty behind. Avoid picking near roads or areas that might be sprayed with chemicals. Respect nature - don't damage other plants while foraging. SPRING FLOWERS: A FEAST FOR THE EYES While you're out exploring, keep an eye out for the stunning spring flowers now appearing across the Yorkshire Wolds: Daffodils are blooming everywhere, but for a truly spectacular display, head to Farndale in the North York Moors, known as "Daffodil Valley" for its breathtaking carpet of yellow blooms along the River Dove. Bluebells will soon be making their appearance. By late April, nearby woodlands will be transformed into magical purple carpets. Flamborough Head offers a stunning coastal walk with spring flowers and returning seabirds, making it perfect for a day trip from Orchard Lodge. CHEF'S RECIPE: WILD GARLIC BUTTER Want to try making something with wild garlic at home? Here's a simple recipe for wild garlic butter: Ingredients: 250g unsalted butter, at room temperature A generous handful of wild garlic leaves, thoroughly washed A pinch of sea salt Method: Finely chop the wild garlic leaves Mix with the softened butter and sea salt Roll into a log using cling film Refrigerate until firm Slice and use to top grilled meats, fish, or vegetables This butter will keep in the refrigerator for up to two weeks, or can be frozen for later use. BOOK YOUR SPRING ESCAPE There's no better time to visit the Yorkshire Wolds than spring. The landscape is coming alive, seasonal ingredients are at their peak, and the longer days are perfect for exploring.
